There is no such thing as an original idea. Every artist will steal anything that resonates with them. That is what makes art so influential: it is an amalgamation of varying experiences that come together to form one composition. “Stealing”, then, is not an inherently malicious act rather it is an important step in creating meaningful pieces. It is this concept that drove my process in making my zine; my aim was to let the developmental process show itself in each piece.

For each digital drawing I stole a line from each of my four favorite songs and essentially drew how I felt about it. For instance, one of my pieces has the line “if I lose everything in the fire, I’m sending all my love to you” written in a spiral. I then drew a humanoid looking creature jumping off a ledge into flames. To me, when I hear that line I feel the complexity of love in a relationship. It is scary to open yourself up to love, it is a leap of faith. Love is full of passion, fire, and too many emotions to count which is why I chose that line from “Last Night on Earth” by Green Day. When I hear that line I feel all the passion and complexities that accompany love.
